A Week of "Firsts"

This week has been jammed packed with eventful happenings. First, we had an earthquake, which was a major shock to us east coasters. It was also the first earthquake both Jon and I have ever experienced. I was at home when the quake hit. It was a bit scary being by my lonesome. My initial thought was that our building had been hit by something (I admit I first thought it was a plane), and then thought a bomb or something went off. I didn't for one minute think it was an earthquake. I quickly ran downstairs to our lobby and was told it was an earthquake. Everyone gathered outside for a while, and was pretty much in a state of panic and shock. Not many east coasters know what to do in this situation. After the quake, we didn't have cell service in the District or surrounding areas for several hours. It was also pretty scary to not be able to connect with loved ones. I was able to email Jon (thank you iPhone) and make sure he was ok at his office. I must say, I hope I never have to experience a quake again. I did not like it at all. We (or more like me) have concluded that our dreams of moving to California are over. I am not a fan of earthquakes!

Now, we are bracing for our first hurricane. Being from North Texas, I haven't see many hurricanes. Now, throw a tornado at me and I can hang with the best of 'em, but a hurricane, not so much. Neither one of us quite know what to expect, so in the words of the media "we are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best." (Can you tell I've been watching way too much news lately?).

I made a trip to the grocery store, along with 1 million other people, and I'm hoping I've got us covered as far as food and water. I also made sure we were prepared with flashlights and candles in case we lose power. We've cleared off our balcony and brought most of our outdoor belonging inside, so we don't lose anything or hurt someone with our flying debris.

And now we wait...

We've been asked to get video of the storm. We will do our best! Stay tuned for more hurricane footage!
